Gr和 Opening of New 写作中心

Where do you go if you need a little help with a history writing assignment, advice on crafting a short story, or composing your college application essay? At Poly, we have just the place.

Director of 学生支持 朱丽叶莫雷蒂 welcomed seventh graders 萨凡纳P. 1928年,埃斯特班. ’28, 欧文B. ’28 to the Gr和 Opening of Poly’s new 写作中心 located in what was formerly known as the Reading Room in the Joseph Dana Allen 图书馆. Moretti shared 写作中心 notebooks, pencils, 和 other swag with the 学生. Also arriving at the center was Jon B. ’29, who declared, “I love writing stories!”

Another young author, 齐亚娜F. ’28, was excited about the center 和 an opportunity to write about animals, especially creatures that are endangered by climate change.

Honing 写作 Skills

Moretti, who is also Department Chair, Learning Support & 浓缩, explained that the goal of the center, which is available to 学生 in Grades 5-12, is to support 和 enrich all student writing 和 to “celebrate writers.“现在, 学生, who would like writing help, are encouraged to make an appointment with a member of the 写作 Center 工作人员 which also includes 英语 teacher 卡梅隆的女子苏珊胆汁酸 P’88, ‘90, ‘95, who recently retired from 43 years of teaching history at Poly.

Beiles said, “My particular role will focus on helping seniors with their college essays. As 学生 are assigned more writing tasks, I’ll be available to work with them 和 their teachers on various components of writing.”

“The new 和 improved 写作中心 will be the site of one-to-one sessions with our center 工作人员, but also feature guest writers from our own faculty 和 NYC broadly who will help 和 inspire our emerging writers, as well as writing ‘events’ that will engage our 学生 in targeted writing exercises.”

Advancing the Artistry of 写作

莫雷蒂说 米甲Hershkovitz P’16, ’18,  Assistant Head of School, 学者, was instrumental in the gr和 opening of the 写作中心. “作为教育者,赫什科维茨说,  “we are all keenly aware of how important strong writing skills are, in every field 和 endeavor of life, 无论什么年龄. 在过去, our 写作中心 successfully supported our 学生 in completing their writing assignments, but as we began to plan for this new year, we were inspired to re-imagine what an even more vibrant 和 well-工作人员ed 写作中心 could offer our 学生. The new 和 improved 写作中心 will be the site of one-to-one sessions with our center 工作人员, but also feature guest writers from our own faculty 和 NYC broadly who will help 和 inspire our emerging writers, as well as writing ‘events’ that will engage our 学生 in targeted writing exercises. We are excited to feature excellent writing 和 to promote our 学生’ capacity 和 appreciation for the artistry that it requires.”

Inspiration Through Workshops 和 访问ing Authors

The 写作中心 工作人员 will liaise with department chairs 和 teachers to find out which 学生 might benefit from individual writing help. But they will also work together to develop writing workshops focused on specific topics. Moretti said she would also love to have guest writers come to speak with our young authors. These might include a sci/fi presentation or a poetry slam.

写作 should be a joyful experience, Moretti said, 和 become a “habit of mind.” That might be how the 写作中心 notebooks that 学生 such as 特雷弗米. ’28 picked up at the Gr和 Opening will come in h和y—to jot down ideas for a creative writing piece to work on in the 写作中心.
